NEW YORK (Reuters) - Man Financial, the brokerage arm of British hedge fund firm Man Group Plc., has won an auction of bankrupt Refco Inc.'s assets, a spokeswoman for Refco said Thursday.
Refco will seek approval for the offer from the U.S bankruptcy court later Thursday, said spokeswoman Sandra Sternberg. Details of the bid, or whether it only involved Refco's most sought-after asset, its futures brokerage unit, were not immediately available.
Refco, formerly the largest independent U.S. futures and commodities brokerage, filed for bankruptcy last month for some of its units -- but not its regulated futures arm -- after an accounting scandal involving its chief executive sparked an exodus of customers.
A spokesman from Man declined to comment, saying the company had not heard definitively about the result of the auction that began Wednesday but dragged on until early Thursday morning
But analysts said a deal with Man made sense.
"It's great news for Man Group. (Man Financial's Chief Executive) Kevin Davis gets the teams and gets on with delivering. He could bolt on the brokerage business like this pretty quickly," said one London-based fund analyst.
Man prevailed over three other bidders, which sources named as U.S. broker-dealer Interactive Brokers Group; a group led by the investment arm of the Dubai government with U.S. buyout firm Yucaipa Companies and Marathon Asset Management; and a private equity group led by U.S. buyout firm J.C. Flowers & Co.
Refco said it received five offers but did not name the bidders.
Chicago brokerage Alaron dropped out of the race after Refco disqualified its offer, which was only for a small part of the firm, its private client business.
Since the scandal emerged a month ago, the investigation into Refco has widened with questions about why accounting problems were not picked up before the company went public in August.
Former Chief Executive Phillip Bennett has been charged with securities fraud, accused of hiding about $430 million in debt, as Refco went public. He is expected to appear in court again Thursday. He has denied any wrongdoing.
Two of three underwriters involved in Refco's $583 million initial public offering in August have received subpoenas from U.S. regulators to hand over documents relating to Refco. Switzerland's Credit Suisse Group Inc. and Bank of America have both said they are cooperating.
The third underwriter, Goldman Sachs declined to comment Thursday on whether it had received any subpoenas.
